Starship Troopers:
Spaceship Building Workshop for Young People
4-6:30pm
Free drop-in workshop, no previous rocket-building experience required
Calling all space explorers! We’re recruiting creative inventors, engineers, dreamers, and, most importantly, artists, for a spaceship building workshop inspired by our two exciting space-themed exhibitions at the International Centre for the Image. How would you design a new device for space exploration? What are the blueprints for your perfect intergalactic travel experience? Teleport in and build a prototype! It IS rocket Science!
During this workshop, participants will use provided craft and everyday materials to design and build their own spaceship, which they can take home.
Practical Information
- This is a free, drop-in workshop for young people ages 4-12 (and their grownups!)
- All children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
- All materials are provided.
- Families are welcome to stay for a short time or for the full duration of the evening.
The workshop will be facilitated by Róisín White. Róisín is an artist and facilitator working with children and young people. In 2020 and 2022 Róisín was awarded the Young People Children and Education Bursary from the Arts Council of Ireland, facilitating two large projects with The Ark, and D-Light Studios. She has worked with children through collaborative photography projects in Portugal and Sweden, and ongoing teaching and facilitation of photography and visual art learning across Ireland.
Space Walk at the International Centre for the Image
5:30-6:30pm
No booking or spacesuit required
Exhibitions open until 8pm
Head to the airlock, and join us for a tour of the three exhibitions at the International Centre for the Image.
Two solo exhibitions Rhi-Entry by Rhiannon Adam (IE) and An Infinitely Dark Legacy by Lewis Bush (UK) present two different artistic perspectives on the politics and power behind space travel and exploration.
In addition, visitors can enjoy a selection of projects from this year’s Female in Focus Award, under the theme of ‘On the Cusp’. The presentation includes two winning series ‘The Other Battlefields’ by Laetitia Vançon (FR) and ‘New Scramble’ by Giya Makondo-Wills (UK/ZA).
This informal tour will take about an hour and welcomes everyone to join the conversation, if you want! – why not read about the artists and their work beforehand?

Studio Visits at the International Centre for the Image
6:15-7pm
No booking required
As the ideal private working spaces they are, artist studios are not usually open to the public and a lot of the artistic process remains unseen. The International Centre for the Image was architecturally designed to allow visitors to peek into the studios through a large window, to observe that process over time. However, Culture Night presents an even better opportunity to not only step inside these work spaces, but actually get to meet and talk to the artists and gain insight into their creative process and current projects.
Join this great opportunity to get behind the scenes at the International Centre for the Image and hear directly from our four artists in residence Aoife Herrity, István László, Róisín White, and Vera Ryklova.

Enjoy not one but three fabulous exhibitions at the International Centre for the Image.
- Rhiannon Adam, Rhi-Entry
This is Rhiannon Adam’s first exhibiton in Ireland and the Irish premiere of Rhi-Entry. - Lewis Bush, An Infinitely Dark Legacy
This is Lewis Bush’s first exhibiton in Ireland and the Irish premiere of his work. - Female in Focus
Female in Focus is an annual award celebrating outstanding work by women and non-binary photographers around the world. The award, created to discover, promote and reward remarkable photographic talent, reflects the commitment to amplify these voices in photography. This year, 22 photographers were selected from over 3500 entries for their work responding to the theme ‘On the Cusp’. Against the backdrop of increasing international instability, this theme looks at both personal and international turning points, whether that be moments of revolution, revelation or transformation; the anticipation of what comes next. From the impact of war on Ukrainian youth (Laetitia Vançon) to South Africa’s tech industry (Giya Makondo-Wills); Queer identity (Lina Maria Sanchez) to the line between reality and fantasy (Cybele Malinowski), the works respond to a world in flux and increasing conflict.
