The Mistake by the Lake is a photographic record of the assortment of school bus stop shelters scattered across the Buffalo, New York landscape. Local parents build these structures in order to protect their children from the frigid and snowy Buffalo winters. Though the shelters are created for a specific need, over time that need diminishes and these curious examples of amateur architecture are left to blend into their surroundings. They remain as reminders of past necessity.
Buffalo’s school bus stop shelters are evidence of a universal impulse of care, which contradicts and undercuts the narrative of neglect that the mention of Buffalo -Chris Motalini’s hometown- sometimes invokes. The heart of this project is the documentation of the architectural products of human concern and emotion that have, in many cases, fallen into disuse.

About the Artist
Chris Mottalini is a Hudson Valley-based photographer, specializing in atmospheric portraits of architecture, interiors and design. Mottalini’s work has been widely published, commissioned and exhibited. Chris has photographed special projects about Anais Nin’s former home in LA, Hawaiian Modernism, the George Nakashima family compound, the Louis Armstrong House in Queens, etc. Mottalini is also currently collaborating on a still life project with Nino, his now eight year old son.
Mottalini’s first book (which set him on the path to becoming a photographer of architecture and interiors) is a final portrait of three demolished Paul Rudolph-designed homes. This was followed by his self-published book, “Land of Smiles”, a quiet, strange and surreal exploration of the landscapes of Thailand. Mottalini spends a month in Thailand each year, visiting his wife’s family.
