“Like a small spark that leads to a big fire, sometimes my biggest artistic project begins with a trivial matter, such as a piece of a photograph that I encountered or a line of a phrase that I read to pass time. I believe every piece of an artistic object contains a piece of the artist’s spirit. As many pottery historians have pointed out, Baekja porcelains from the Joseon period can be best described as a marvelous artistic achievement that’s only possible from a non-self or selfless status of mind which is free from all desire to make things good looking. Now, I am back from my long journey of seventy thousand kilometers in searching for Korean Baekja porcelain, scattered all over the world in different museums. I feel that the once lost Baekja is now sitting next to me, breathing together as I do, as if the spirit of the craftsman has returned Korea in my photographs.”
