Tokyo Tokyo consists of a series of diptychs in which the mythical “decisive moment” of traditional documentary photography is lampooned. In their projects, WassinkLundgren playfully turn the unwritten rules of photography upside down. But behind the joke is always a serious attempt to expand both the artistic as well as the social significance of their medium.

About the Artists
WassinkLundgren is a collaboration between Dutch photographers Thijs groot Wassink (born in 1981 in Deventer) and Ruben Lundgren (born in 1983 in Hilversum), who live and work, respectively, in London and Beijing. They are the recipients of numerous awards, including the Prix du Livre at Les Rencontres d’Arles 2007 for their publication Empty Bottles. WassinkLundgren has exhibited in museums worldwide, including Foam Amsterdam (2007, 2013); the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam (2010, 2012); the CAFA Museum in Beijing (2011); Fotomuseum Winterthur (2009–10); the Guangdong Museum of Art (2010); the National Media Museum in Bradford, U.K. (2009); and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2006). The duo is represented by Pékin Fine Arts in Beijing and shows with Marion de Canniere in Antwerp.

Thijs Groot Wassink is a Dutch former-photographer. His work has been exhibited in museums worldwide, and he has received numerous awards, including the Prix du Livre at Les Rencontres d’Arles 2007 for the publication Empty Bottles. In 2016, The Chinese Photobook was released, a research project in collaboration with Martin Parr.

Ruben Lundgren is a Dutch photographer and curator based in Beijing. He is renowned for his work within the conceptual photography duo WassinkLundgren and gained significant attention with publications such as Empty Bottles (2007) and Tokyo Tokyo (2010). Lundgren completed a master’s degree in photography at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2011. His relocation to China has profoundly influenced his career, leading him to engage deeply with Chinese contemporary photography. He currently works as a photojournalist for Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant and as an independent curator of Chinese photography. Together with Martin Parr, he co-edited The Chinese Photobook (2015). Other publications include Hlleo? (2018) and Me Nu (2018), a tasty collection of Chinese vernacular food photography.

The Archive of Modern Conflict is an organisation dedicated to the collection and preservation of vernacular photographs, objects, artefacts, curiosities, and ephemera. Founded in 1991, the archive began as a collection of photographs relating to war and conflict but has since expanded its remit to become the vast and thematically diverse repository it is today. They have produced and published over thirty books, often collaborating with photographers and artists such as Stephen Gill, Cristina de Middel, Thomas Mailaender, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, and Don McCullin.
