People who are already accustomed to image consumption and voyeurism experience a reversal of the gaze when they stand in front of the lens. The act of confronting themselves through the eyes of another creates an artificial and somewhat unsettling distortion. These images, detached from real events or emotions, are reconstructed through Lee’s own experiences and perceptions, continuously accumulating errors. Stranger uncovers emotional symbols embedded in unconscious facial expressions and gestures—ones that the subjects themselves may not even recognize—ultimately sharing the gaze and the judgment that comes with it.

About the Artist
Haneul Lee uses photography as an interface for exploring various modes of relationships between herself and others. She is intrigued by how our transition into the digital era has impacted photography and is constantly studying linkages between images and the world we live in. She is particularly interested in the emotions that arise from encounters with strangers. Her projects exploring these themes include Strangers—where she documented about 400 people—and Boomers.
