Turkish guest workers have been living in Germany since 1961. The first group to emigrate at the invitation of the German government, along with other guests from Southern Europe, they came to rebuild the war-torn country that had lost many of its cities. and its people. Even after half a century, this workforce faces daily challenges and struggles to feel a sense of belonging in their new home. This ‘on-the-go’ integration left many in the uncertainty of what was the least comfortable choice, between belonging and homesickness. While they were full members of society in Germany – despite the daily pain of being part of an immigrant society, from stereotyping to xenophobia – the ideal of a ‘dream homeland’ alleviates the daily disappointment and provides mental and psychological shelter for those in need. Members Only explores the fluid and multifaceted identity of Turkish guest workers in Germany through photographs of these shifting homelands.
