Since 2002, Sze Tsung Leong has been photographing the dramatic urban changes that have transformed the cities of China — revealing a process that ranges from the destruction of traditional neighborhoods, which once formed the unique identities of China’s cities, to the mass construction of new urban environments. Photographed with a large format view camera in cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Nanjing, Pingyao, and Xiamen, these highly detailed images portray the immense scale of an urban upheaval overwhelming the minute scale of the individual.

About the Artist
Sze Tsung Nicolás Leong is a British-American artist, born in Mexico City in 1970. His work is an effort to picture and understand the complexity of connections and relationships in the larger world. His series include “Horizons,” “Cities,” and “History Images” (published by Steidl in 2005). He is a Guggenheim Fellow, and his work is held in major museum collections throughout the world.

About the Author
Stephen Shore’s work has been widely published and exhibited for the past forty-five years. He was the first living photographer to have a one-man show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since Alfred Stieglitz, forty years earlier. He has also had one-man shows at George Eastman House, Rochester; Kunsthalle, Dusseldorf; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Jeu de Paume, Paris; and Art Institute of Chicago. In 2017, the Museum of Modern Art opened a major retrospective spanning Stephen Shore’s entire career. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. His series of exhibitions at Light Gallery in New York in the early 1970s sparked new interest in color photography and in the use of the view camera for documentary work.

About the Publisher
Born in Göttingen in 1950, Gerhard Steidl began working as a printer and designer in 1969. Soon the customers of his screen-printing workshop included Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers and Nam June Paik, among other well-known artists. In 1972, the first Steidl book Befragung der documenta (Questioning documenta) was published. From political non-fiction he then expanded into literature and selected books on art and photography.
