Invited in residence by the Carré d’Art from May 2021 to September 2022, photographer and visual artist Catherine Duverger approached the territory of Chartres de Bretagne by focusing on the Seiche, a tributary river of the Vilaine which crosses the town. This watercourse suffered significant pollution in August 2017, following the massive release of lactose by the Lactalis factory on the Retiers site, 30 kilometers away. For her creative residency, Catherine Duverger worked around this environmental disaster based on scientific documents, press clippings and testimonies. Through the use of superimposition and visual metaphor, she gradually took stock of this accident, which, since she perceived its contours, has haunted the landscape.

Hugo Kostrzewa (1982) is a visual, sound and food artist working between Rennes and Lille (France). Hugo Kostrzewa works with our senses, what runs through us, exploring the notion of what he calls matter in relation, and questioning our place as living beings entangled within other living and non-living worlds. He creates encounters between uses, stories, objects and people, observing carefully how they collide.

About the Publisher
Located in Chartres de Bretagne, near Rennes, the Carré d’Art is a municipal gallery located within the South Pole, a multidisciplinary cultural space (performance hall, media library and plastic arts and theater workshops). With the programming of four exhibitions per year, the gallery aims to present photography from different approaches and facets, by inviting emerging and established artists. She offers to support photographers over the long term by setting up an annual residency. Alongside the exhibitions, the Carré d’Art is developing a program of mediation and awareness workshops for school audiences, but also aimed at vulnerable audiences, through adapted proposals. It also organizes a set of cultural initiatives and actions (artist meetings, conferences, round tables), and develops partnerships with other actors –cultural or not – at the local and national level. Since 1997, the Carré d’Art has pursued a policy of systematically purchasing a photograph during each exhibition. This collection is today made up of more than 160 works, from which thematic selections are regularly presented in art centers, educational galleries of educational establishments, but also in public spaces in the city of Chartres -de-Bretagne (summer exhibition every two years). Finally, the Carré d’Art is developing, in conjunction with the media library, a documentary photographic collection, which in 2025 brings together more than 700 photography books.
