About theArtists
Born in France, J.S. Cartier emigrated to the USA in the Fifties. After serving in the US Army, he studied painting at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford on the GI Bill, then returned to New York to pursue a painting career until about 1970, when photography became his primary medium. From 1971 to 1977, he curated shows of many young French photographers for the French Cultural Services in New York . Cartier has since carried out several projects: “Natural Landscapes of New York City” (1980-84); “New York – Visual Chaos” (1984-90). During the same period, he undertook a photographic survey of the traces of the First World War still remaining in France and Belgium, which several grants enabled him to carry out full-time from 1990 to 1993. In 1997, he began a new photography project, supported in part by the French Ministry of Culture, on the Laroche-Migennes railyards. In 1998-99, he photographed the old city of Auxerre and sought in Brussels, Belgium (1999) to integrate examples of Art Nouveau/Jugendstil architecture with their modern surroundings. In 2001 Cartier photographed the interface between the countryside and the city of Auxerre, France. In 2005, he undertook a project on the traces of World War II in Russia. In 2010, after a hiatus devoted to writing and cataloguing his prints, he resumed a photography project on the town of Brienon, near his home.

Peter Cattrell was born in Glasgow in 1959. He studied at St Andrews University from 1977-8, then from 1979-82 he studied photography at The London College of Printing. A skilled printer, he has worked for Fay Godwin, printing her pictures. Cattrell is a landscape photographer, concentrating particularly on man’s impact on his surroundings. He has exhibited in Britain and the United States.
