For the past seven years, Pia Paulina Guilmoth and Jesse Bull Saffire have been scavenging within a sixty-mile orbit of their home: abandoned houses collapsing into the earth, mould-streaked cardboard boxes, the hunting camp at the end of the road, a politician’s discarded gay porn collection, yard sale leftovers, a junk-shop beside the waterfall. Family photos, town reports, forgotten newspapers — fragments of lives slipping out of memory. The book collects these rescues, re-assemblies, and accidents: material both tender and grotesque, mundane and uncanny. Among them are photographs taken by Pia and Jesse on 8 MP digital cameras while trespassing and scavenging for material, alongside images from Pia’s own family archive. In their hands, the cast-offs of rural central Maine transform into a jumbled chronicle — a history that never asked to be preserved, yet somehow survived, soggy and stubborn. All in all, ‘Fishworm’ is about dykes digging through trash.

About the Artist
Pia-Paulina Guilmoth lives and makes art in rural central Maine. Pia is a working class transgender woman who lives with her girlfriend and two cats in a small tree-house-like space inside of a very old shoe factory on the bank of the Sandy River. In her free time she likes to lay in the dirt, shoot guns, hold her friends, and trespass into abandoned houses and barns. Pia’s work is foremost about harnessing beauty as a form of resistance to a world full of terrors. While making art she is thinking about class, gender, euphoria, dysphoria and whatever else is happening in her life at that given moment. Pia is releasing her third book in November 2024 with Stanley/Barker titled Flowers Drink the River. She is having her first major solo exhibition with Webber Gallery in London upon its release. She was a 2022 Macdowell Fellow in Visual Arts, and is a 2024 winner of the Google/Aperture Creator Labs, and the Peter Reed Foundation grant.

Jesse Bull Saffire is not an artist. She’s a community organizer who helps coordinate land return to the Wabanaki Nations. She loves the woods, demolition derbies, old junk, and sitting by a river with friends.

About the Publisher
Void is an independent publishing house dedicated to photography books and education. The project is driven by its founders Myrto Steirou and João Linneu. You might bump into Myrto, Void’s editor, at a book fair or festival in a far flung part of the globe, but you’ll usually find her in Greece, at their store in Athens. João, Void’s designer, is based in Reykjavík… it’s entirely possible that you may not meet him (in person at least).
