‘Dimma Brume Mist’ was born from over two hundred binders containing thousands of contact sheets and negatives. Over the course of five years, JH Engström periodically returned to this archive, mining deep within the overlooked to search for the common thread present throughout his 35-years of image-making. His ambition was not to create a ‘best of’ collection, nor a summary of previous books, but to create something else entirely. The result is ‘Dimma Brume Mist’—an epic book of previously unpublished photographs and text.
The framework of a book emerged in the early stages of Engström’s excavation of his archive. He began forming pairs and sequences of images which oscillated between opposite and complementary elements such as between rural / urban, movement / stillness, inner / outer, security / insecurity, child / adult, reflection / impulse, self / other, nature / civilisation. As the book evolved a second type of oscillation developed between images and words—forming the building blocks for the book.

About the Artist
JH Engström was born in Karlstad in 1969. He is a Swedish photographer and video artist, living and working between Paris and Smedsby (Värmland, Sweden). Engström first grew up in the remote province of Värmland in central Sweden until the family moved to Paris when he was 10 years old. An overwhelming change that prompted him early on to look at his own existence, forging a vision rooted in these contrasting living environments, opposing the slow-time energy of the Swedish countryside to the exaltation of Parisian life. In 1993, he settled in Stockholm where he shared the lab with Anders Petersen, a leading figure with a determinant influence in the expressive dimension of his work. He applied these precepts at the Gothenburg University school of photography until 1997 before moving to New York between 1998 and 2000 where he spent time at Robert Frank’s studio.

About the Publisher
Void is an independent publishing house dedicated to photography books and education. The project is driven by its founders Myrto Steirou and João Linneu. You might bump into Myrto, Void’s editor, at a book fair or festival in a far flung part of the globe, but you’ll usually find her in Greece, at their store in Athens. João, Void’s designer, is based in Reykjavík… it’s entirely possible that you may not meet him (in person at least). Void works with both established and up-and-coming artists, proudly fostering photographers’ debut books.
Void has collaborated with many international art institutions since we started, back in October 2016. In 2021 Void became one of Futures Photography’s members. Void is devoted to and passionate about the projects they undertake. In their books, you will find powerful stories and innovative design, melded together with fine and experimental material.
