For this seventeenth title of the Collection Des oiseaux (On Birds), the French photographer Nathalie Baetens invites us to discover the micro-habitats of birds from all over the world. Small shacks, huts, thatched cabanas, little houses—their formal variety is both ingenious and aesthetic—suspended in mid-air or fastened securely to branches, or even hidden among thick foliage, the nests photographed by Nathalie Baetens are fascinating in their diversity and their delicateness.
To accompany this visual corpus, a text by Fiona Meadows, architect and curator at the Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, explores the relationship between nest architecture and human architecture, at a time of major environmental and climatic challenges. An interview between Nathalie Baetens and Philippe Séclier, co-director of the Collection Des oiseaux (On Birds), looks back at the origins of the photographer’s project and describes her special relationship with these micro-habitats.

About the Artist
Enthralled with Art Brut and the poetic force of nature, Nathalie Baetens has been developing a photographic project about the ephemeral in France and Japan for several years. Forgotten cabins, masked figures, fragile shorelines, or curious beasts—she works in black-and-white, carefully selecting the grain and the paper that will make her images look like engravings, drawings, or some other form of contemporary ethnographic representation. Her photographs are exhibited regularly, notably at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (BnF), the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lyon, the Mois de la Photo held at the Grand Palais, the Festival du Regard in Cergy, the Promenades Photographiques in Vendôme, etc. They are also held in the BnF collection, the Hermès collection of contemporary photography, the Florence and Damien Bachelot collection, and the Antoine de Galbert collection.

About the Publisher
Atelier EXB publishes works that address new forms of photography, contemporary art and sciences. Founded in 2002 by Xavier Barral, and taken over in 2020 by the five members of the team (Jordan Alves, Nathalie Chapuis, Yseult Chehata, Charlotte Debiolles and Perrine Somma), the publishing house conceives each book with great attention to both content and form.
