Spanning three years (2020-2023),  between the skin and sea emerges at a time of great collective upheaval. The hyper-local takes centre-stage; made among the artist’s immediate communities, tales of entanglement, relation, connection and intimacy unfold. Leaning into the shadows, the photographs trace networks of love, grief, kinship, shelter and repair.

About the Artist
Katrin Koenning was born in 1978 in Dortmund, Germany. She lives and works in Naarm, Australia. Koenning is a visual artist from Bochum-Langendreer (in the German Ruhrgebiet). Her work travels across still and moving images and text, at times including found materials, painting and collage. Pursuing intimacy and interconnection her work centres around practice as relational encounter. Most stories evolve through years and use returning as a way of drawing closer. Merging in and out of each other, different series often intersect. In her extended image-dialogues, Katrin uses fragments and slippages to suggest narrative spaces, communities and lived experiences that are allied, fluid and multiplicit. Many of her series render non-human human entanglement and intimate kin, positing imaginaries with a greater-than-human world.

About the Publisher
Chose Commune is a French publishing house based in Marseille, run by French/Japanese co-founder Cécile Poimbœuf-Koizumi since its creation in 2014.
Driven by the desire to discover — or rediscover — the works of lesser known figures on the international scene, Chose Commune curates, designs, edits and publishes artists’ books in the fields of photography, works on paper and ceramics.
Each of our books is published with the idea of existing “on its own” — designed in close collaboration with the artist and always carefully crafted, they are the result of an encounter and an independent research, and embody our commitment to supporting and distributing unique and essential work.
