The MJLC is an abolitionist discussion/study group that uses criticism to examine the widespread harms of the carceral state. In addition, we use what we learn and discuss in the study group to produce a magazine. The theme of this Spring 2023 Issue is “Renaissance.” As an abolitionist movement, the MJLC aims to examine the Renaissance as a prerequisite to revolution. Renaissance is a call for rebirth, re-awakening, a demand for change, and the re-evaluation of the system. All pieces contained in this issue, submitted by writers, activists, and thinkers, may also work as a vehicle to make others conscious of something.

About the Magazine:
The Madison Journal of Literary Criticism (MJLC) is a contemporary journal and study group at the University of Wisconsin—Madison. The Madison Journal of Literary Criticism is a coalition comprised of both a journal and a study group that engages with the political, social, and cultural realities of the world around us, specifically examining them as they relate to perpetuated systems of harm and the road to abolishing them. The MJLC was founded in 2010 as a UW—Madison English Department journal that focused on literary criticism—specifically, student-written essays. After 10 volumes, the MJLC began holding study groups in 2022 to discuss various topics with a social justice and abolitionist framework. These topics intertwine with each semester’s theme, which the journal also bases its content on.
