About the Magazine
KATALOG is led by Jens Friis, who holds an MA in History of Art with an emphasis on photography. He works as an independent curator, consultant, photo historian, publisher and book collector. From 2003–2016, he was curator in charge of the photographic collection at Museet for Fotokunst in Odense, Denmark and also served as artistic co-director of the museum-initiated photo festival FotoTriennale.dk. During this period, he was editor of the bilingual publication KATALOG – Journal of Photography & Video, which originated at the same museum. In 2015, he assumed full responsibility for the journal, which is now independently published in its 33rd year with contributors, subscribers and readers in many countries.
KATALOG’s editorial “flexi-board” brings together an international group of collaborators connected through meetings at festivals and seminars, including museum and festival colleagues who write articles and contribute to ongoing projects. The journal has been involved in initiatives such as Nordic Photo Festival Network, the Creative Europe partnership Parallel, and Fast Forward – Women in Photography, launched at Paris Photo and Tate Modern in 2019. KATALOG has also collaborated with festivals in Cardiff, Glasgow, Houston, Landskrona, Lisbon and others.
As a Denmark-based non-profit publication focusing on photography and video, KATALOG reinvests subscription income into improved paper, printing, binding and packaging. The journal also distributes material related to exhibitions that may benefit from wider circulation, which subscribers may find included with their issues.
