There among the Fair that is where my soul be called to. Around every horse that gallops free. The noise of a hundred Irish accents floating throughout across every leaf that blows still. That is where my people be of every class and kind. Telling tales big and small for the young to hear. Jolly are our faces at the Fair and our hearts set alight with Grat ’gra (golden love). The children voices boisterous in tempo, clapping and cheering their way through the fair. All kinds of everything can be found there, from medals, coins, feathery hats and even buckles for a cowboys belt. The old and the young mingling with laughter. Horses strong in form and proud in beauty. It is there we all come together to greet and meet from dawn till dusk. I wonder just how many feet walked the same fair with the same flare.

About the Artist
John Foley is a Dublin-based documentary photographer, originally from Waterford, Ireland. He grew up in a deeply Catholic environment, which greatly influenced his work. He has always been fascinated by communities and the rituals, traditions, and shared experiences that create a sense of belonging. His photography focuses on capturing these moments – both old and new, pagan and religious – highlighting how they foster connection and communal celebration. This curiosity has taken him across the world, documenting what it truly means to belong.
