Between 1987 and 1994 Tony Kearns photographed many of London’s markets including Greenwich Market, South London; Ridley Road, Dalston; Berwick Street, Soho; Columbia Road Flower Market; Brixton Market; and Chapel Market, Islington.
Drawn to markets by their perfect blend of controlled chaos and unselfconscious subjects lost in their reveries, Kearns captured glimpses of these centres of calm amid the teeming crowds streaming past.
Stall Time is both a social record of London markets and a snapshot of the city’s vibrant street style, youth culture and commercial activity outside of an increasingly corporate climate.
Stall Time collects over one hundred evocative photographs of London markets. With an introductory essay by Orla Fitzpatrick and a note from the photographer, the photographs are placed in their wider cultural context.
