In late February 2020, just weeks before Ireland’s first Covid-19 lockdown, I set off on a ten-day solo road trip around Iceland. I had planned to share the journey—and the challenges of driving in an Icelandic winter—with a friend, but when they pulled out at the last minute, I resolved to go alone. I had been dreaming of this trip for years. As soon as I left Reykjavík, I found myself pulling over every few minutes to photograph and quickly realised that taking this trip alone was a blessing in disguise. With no schedule but my own, I could follow every impulse down quiet roads, linger at abandoned buildings, or trek across vast, snow-covered landscapes. The pure joy and freedom of that experience became even more precious in hindsight, as the world shut down just a few weeks later.

About the Artist
Neil J. Smyth is an Irish artist and photographer whose work includes landscape, portraiture, interiors, architecture, 3D virtual tours and drone photography and videography. He holds a BA in Fine Art Media from NCAD, and an MPhil in Music & Media Technologies from Trinity College Dublin. Neil is based in Dublin but finds much of his inspiration through travel, both abroad and around Ireland.
