In recent decades, Ireland has experienced a significant shift from a deep-rooted Catholic orthodoxy. This project explores how traditional Catholic practices, such as mass rocks, reenactments, holy wells and pilgrimages continue to endure in a more diverse and secularised Ireland.

About the Artist
John Foley is a Dublin-based documentary photographer, originally from Waterford, Ireland. He grew up in a deeply Catholic environment, which greatly influenced his work. He has always been fascinated by communities and the rituals, traditions, and shared experiences that create a sense of belonging. His photography focuses on capturing these moments – both old and new, pagan and religious – highlighting how they foster connection and communal celebration. This curiosity has taken him across the world, documenting what it truly means to belong.
