Cat Wire Fence and Corrugated Iron Kieran Dunning

In 2013, the Department of Justice embarked on a plan to improve community relations and build a united and shared society in Northern Ireland. One of the key headlines was their commitment to have reduced and removed all interface barriers by 2023. Now 12 years after this initial plan was proposed, although some have been reduced in their ferocity, many of these structures remain anchored to the land, with some still growing. Cat Wire Fence and Corrugated Iron, focuses on Belfast, where over 20 miles of peace lines still remain. The work examines how these structures remain permanent fixtures in the daily lives of those living beside them, the Department of Justice’s evolving approach to their removal, and the ongoing legacy of defensive urban planning in interface areas.

Kieran is a documentary photographer who explores the relationship between the built environment and the people who inhabit it. His most recent project focused on Belfast’s interface areas and peace lines. More specifically examining; how these structures remain a permanent fixture in the lives of those living beside them, the department of justices’ approach to removing them, and the defensive architecture used to create interface areas. This work culminated in an exhibition featuring a peace wall installation, and a hand-made book. His work was exhibited in Edinburgh as part of his Degree Show in May 2025, and London as part of Free Range 2025 taking place over the weekend of the 12th July.
