Designed by Briony Carlin and Mark Duffy BREXIT IS YOUR FAULT is a reactionary artists book created with the specific intention of being censored. This act took place as part of a live performance during Format Festival 2019. The destructive interventions created new collage work within the book commenting on the irreversible Brexit process.
The book originally contained behind the scenes photographs the Houses of Parliament redacted to represent the censorship Duffy experienced whilst carrying out his role there. Working in Parliament, he was contractually forbidden from making artistic work around politics as well as engaging in any form of political comment. The book was chosen as a format for exhibition in an attempt to keep the act a secret from his employer. It didn’t work.

About the Artist
Mark Duffy is an Irish artist based in the UK. Duffy’s artworks explore issues of power and national identity. He uses photography and multi-media installation to build recurring motifs that reveal alternative narratives about political phenomena with absurdity and humour. Having spent his childhood as an illegal immigrant in the USA, Duffy uses his experiences as part of the postcolonial Irish diaspora to interrogate how a sense of place, belonging and national and cultural identity can be constructed, or dismantled. This threads through his work about Ireland and Irishness, as well as his many projects critiquing Brexit and UK Parliament.
