Nuevo Nuevo Mundo El impacto del audiovisual en la difusión internacional de la lengua y de la cultura en español is a collection of essays that aims to map and analyze the international landscape of Spanish-language audiovisual media and viewers’ relationship to that landscape. Here we find the great ambassadors of Spanish-language cinema, who blazed the trail: Pedro Almodóvar, Luis Buñuel, and Víctor Erice; the decades of expansion in Argentine cinema, from Juan José Campanella to Lucrecia Martel; from the golden age of Mexican cinema to the “holy trinity” of Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro, and Alfonso Cuarón; alongside the great successes of Cuban, Chilean, and Caribbean cinema, which—ranging from documentaries to fiction—have been screened at festivals, in theaters, and on television in every corner of the globe.
This book, presented by the Instituto Cervantes in collaboration with Netflix, explores the new space for the dissemination and reception of Pan-Hispanic language and culture through audiovisual media. It is a snapshot in the form of a map, containing detailed studies of this revolutionary impact from a multitude of perspectives; a cartography destined to become an exceptional tool for understanding both the place of our audiovisual production in the global context—and particularly in significant territories such as the U.S., Brazil, Egypt, Japan, Serbia, and India—and the importance of this industry for the dissemination and teaching of Spanish.
Thus, various representatives from the academic world offer their personal analyses of the significance that these Spanish-produced works have had for the understanding and appreciation of our language: from the renewal of language teaching and the perception of Spanish itself to the positive cultural connection fostered through consumption, as well as the high artistic recognition of the industry and its professionals.
