A collection of essays published to accompany Gábor Gerhes’ photobook and exhibition “Atlas”.
The exhibition’s centrepiece, Gábor Gerhes’ atlas of the same name is 368 pages long and complete with illustrations. ATLAS has all the characteristics of the atlas format but upon reading, it conjures up a world that is both uncannily similar and completely alien to our own. In lieu of universal conclusions and ultimate explanations, ATLAS offers a presentation of Gerhes’ personal worldview and questions emerging from it. Acting as an inventory of both his oeuvre and life experience, the book systematizes and showcases works which are based on the observations he made (starting from his childhood) and the unique objects he collected.

About the Artist
Gábor Gerhes (1962–) is a Munkácsy Mihály Prize winning visual artist, university educator, a regular member of the Széchenyi Academy of Literature and Arts. An external lecturer at the Media Design Program of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design between 2006–2015, he has filled the same position at the Budapest Metropolitan University since 2010. A former Vice-President of the Studio of Young Artists’ Association, he is a member of the Association of Hungarian Photographers, and of the Intermedia Section of the National Association of Hungarian Creative Artists. His work has been acknowledged repeatedly, with the scholarship of the Soros Foundation, the Eötvös Scholarship of the Ministry of Culture, the Derkovits Scholarship, the Munkácsy Prize and numerous other prizes and distinctions.

About the Publisher
The Municipal Gallery, to be found in the building of the Kiscelli Museum, is the fine arts collection of the Budapest History Museum. The picture gallery gives home to representations of the history of Budapest on the one hand, and to works of influential artists, irrespective of subject, on the other.
