2018 will be the fifth year the National Gallery of Ireland hosts the awarding of an annual Portrait Prize. We are delighted to welcome Zurich as our new sponsors for the Prize; the Zurich Portrait Prize. Entries from across the country were considered by our external jury of three in late July. The exhibition, documented by this newly designed catalogue is the fruit of their considered deliberations. Decisions by a jury – any jury – are never objective. Rather, they reflect the knowledge, expertise and individual tastes of those who come together to assess a large group of submitted artworks – in this case numbering nearly three hundred. Sitting in on their discussions has been a privilege, as an exhibition emerged from the process of longlisting, then shortlisting a group of very diverse works. This award has become a showcase for emerging and established artists, many of whom do not make their way as professional portrait artists, and some of whom are making forays in a new direction. The support of Zurich is critical to the success of this exhibition and how it is received at the Gallery and further afield.

About the Publisher
The Gallery was established by the National Gallery of Ireland Act 1854. Since then, there have been a number of subsequent amending Acts providing for the administration of the institution and further defining its functions, namely, the National Gallery of Ireland Acts (1854-1963) and the National Cultural Institutions Acts (1997-2023). Under its statutes, oversight of the affairs of the Gallery is entrusted to a Board of Governors and Guardians (the ‘Board’). The statutes provide for a post of a Director, who is appointed by the Board, and is responsible for the operation of the institution.
