This is what comes… Collective Histories of Northern Arts was published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name, which took place at the Golden Thread Gallery from 23rd October until the 29th November 2014. The exhibition served as the penultimate instalment of the Golden Thread Gallery’s Collective Histories of Northern Irish Arts series, a series of exhibitions and accompanying publications whose aim was collectively to form a significant archive of Northern Irish Art from 1945 to the present.
This is what comes… focuses on how international artists, artists from the outside, have engaged with the complexities of Northern Ireland’s recent histories. It raises questions about how the conflict in Northern Ireland has been viewed and represented, and brings to the foreground the role mediation has played in informing or misinforming understanding. The artists brought together here provide insight into the strategies that they have employed and the debates that their work has instigated. Hugh Mulholland’s curatorial approach has extended beyond the bringing together of a selection of artists, to include commissioned written works as well, rather than an extended essay by himself.

About the Author
Hugh Mulholland was the founding Director of the Context Gallery Derry (now CCA) in 1992, and was Director of the Ormeau Baths Gallery, Belfast from 1997-2006. During this period, he established OBG as the most significant venue for contemporary visual arts in Northern Ireland. Mulholland has also worked as an independent curator and was Commissioner of Northern Ireland’s first presentation at the Venice Biennale in 2005, with a group exhibition entitled The Nature of Things. He also curated Northern Ireland’s following exhibition at the Biennale in 2007 with a solo show of work by Willie Doherty. He was also curator for Kilkenny Arts Festival in 2006 and 2007, as well as curating exhibitions internationally in Berlin, Istanbul and Italy. Mulholland is currently Curator at the MAC, Belfast, Northern Ireland’s leading contemporary visual arts space.
