Celebrating forty years of photographic arts and education, the FotoFest Biennial 2026 presents Global Visions: FotoFest at 40, on view March 8 through May 10, 2026, across three Sawyer Yards buildings in Arts District Houston: Silver Street Studios, Winter Street Studios, and the “The Silo at Sawyer Yards.”

Curated by FotoFest co-founder and former artistic director Wendy Watriss, executive director Steven Evans, and associate curators Annick Dekouk and Madi Murphy, the exhibition revisits four decades of FotoFest’s exhibitions, publications, and citywide photography and photo-related media projects. Drawing extensively from the organization’s archives, Global Visions: FotoFest at 40 brings together more than 600 works by artists from over 58 countries, reflecting FotoFest’s long-standing belief that images can connect people across cultures, borders, and lived experience. The works on view – drawn from twenty FotoFest Biennials presented between 1986 and 2024 – span more than a century and a half of photographic practice, from early analog traditions to contemporary digital and expanded forms.
Together, they trace how artists around the world have responded to their historical and social contexts, engaging themes such as identity, migration, memory, conflict, environment, and everyday life. Some images document specific places and moments, while others adopt more poetic or conceptual approaches; all reflect FotoFest’s commitment to presenting multiple perspectives and honoring the complexity of lived experience.

Presented as a layered and dialogic exhibition, Global Visions: FotoFest at 40 invites visitors to see FotoFest’s history not as a fixed narrative, but as an ongoing conversation – one that looks back while also looking forward.

About the Festival
FotoFest is a Houston-based contemporary arts organization co-founded by photojournalists Frederick Baldwin and Wendy Watriss. FotoFest is dedicated to advancing photography and visual culture through the presentation of exhibitions, public programs, and publications. The examination of social, cultural, and political histories and contemporary life through the lens of photography and related media is central to FotoFest’s mission.

In addition to the organization’s year-round programming, FotoFest organizes a city-wide biennial project in the form of large-scale central exhibitions, curated lectures, performances, a symposium, and film programs. The organization also hosts several professional development programs, including annually held Meeting Place Portfolio Reviews, which host hundreds of artists and professionals working in the field of art and photography. Through its Literacy Through Photography program, FotoFest organizes K–12 classroom-based learning projects designed to encourage creativity and strengthen student writing, comprehension, and expression, reaching thousands of students. A platform for art and ideas since 1983, FotoFest is committed to promoting lasting international dialogue, cultural exchange, scholarship, and community enrichment by working with artists, audiences, academics, curators and influential figures in art, culture, and society.

The aim of the company is to offer a worldwide platform for its artists as well as being a family of artists in the old-fashioned way. We do not only publish books and market those worldwide, we also actively work together with our artists to help them with their careers. We search for instance for exhibition possibilities in different countries both in public and commercial galleries. Also because of that, we operate in close cooperation with galleries in other countries as well as photography festivals. We organise exhibitions in our gallery in Amsterdam about four times a year.
