As we have mentioned in many contexts and occasions, photography today exists in a state of transformation. As digital culture continues to reshape how images are created, consumed, and distributed, the medium has become increasingly fluid. What was once defined by the still image and the print now stretches across moving image, sound, performance, installation, code, and interface. This expansion is not simply the result of technological development. It reflects deeper cultural, economic, and social shifts that are influencing how photographers work, what they need, and how their work moves through the world.
FUTURES was created in response to this changing landscape. Each year, the programme brings together a wide-ranging selection of emerging artists from across Europe. These practitioners are not simply working within photography as it has been traditionally defined. They are actively reshaping their boundaries. The selection of artists presented in this catalogue reflects the medium’s ongoing evolution. Their artistic practices offer insight into what photography can be today and where it might be headed. This year’s group exemplifies a generation of image-makers who move fluidly between media and disciplines. Their work is often grounded in sustained research practices and marked by a strong conceptual grounding. Many of them engage with questions of identity, ecology, labour, surveillance, and memory. Not only through representation, but through experimentation with form and process. Some use archival material to construct new narra-tives. Others build immersive environments or make use of new technologies to inspire their visuals. Across the board, their work demonstrates a refusal to remain static and a desire to engage with the complexities of contemporary life in ways that feel both urgent and thoughtful.
