Don McCullin has been making photographs for more than 50 years, first capturing the small dramas of everyday life in 1950s London, then travelling to the world’s most dangerous conflict zones, and more recently exploring the landscapes of Somerset in England.
Published to accompany an exhibition of his work at the National Gallery of Canada, this book includes more than 130 works drawn from all of McCullin’s major series – his social documentary work in England, his Berlin Wall series, his award-winning work on war and famine, his anthropological expeditions, and his still lifes and landscapes.

About the Contributors
Marc Mayer is a Canadian-American writer, curator and art historian. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he was sequentially Curator, Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo; Director, the Power Plant in Toronto; then Deputy Director for Art of the Brooklyn Museum in New York City. From 2004-2008, he served as Director of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. Mayer was Director and CEO of the National Gallery of Canada from 2009-2019. In 2017, he published the sweeping revisionist account, Art in Canada (2017).

Katherine Stauble, is a writer, artist, and lover of the literary and performing arts. Stauble was born in Montreal, grew up in Toronto and studied French Literature before becoming a teacher and textbook editor. After moving to the south of France and then Ottawa (sort of like the Mediterranean, she likes to think, for its seductive shorelines), she worked for over a decade at the National Gallery of Canada. As a curatorial assistant, researcher and writer, she drew on her lifelong love of art and art history, and deepened her knowledge. Today, Stauble is an independent writer specializing in art publications, and an artist with a focus on printmaking.

About the Publishers
The Archive of Modern Conflict is an organisation dedicated to the collection and preservation of vernacular photographs, objects, artefacts, curiosities, and ephemera. Founded in 1991, the archive began as a collection of photographs relating to war and conflict but has since expanded its remit to become the vast and thematically diverse repository it is today. They have produced and published over thirty books, often collaborating with photographers and artists such as Stephen Gill, Cristina de Middel, Thomas Mailaender, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin, and Don McCullin.
