Organized in four sections corresponding to the museum’s four floors, the exhibition “À toi de faire, ma mignonne” takes a different approach from the many events of the “Picasso Celebration 1973–2023” that honor the Spanish artist. Sophie Calle’s exhibition offers a curious and quirky take on a selection of iconic works by Picasso, whose images and legacy the artist evokes through a personal narrative unfolding on the ground floor of the museum. With this exhibition, which unfolds across the floors independently of Picasso and takes on a decidedly retrospective character, Sophie Calle explores some of the themes that are central to her work, such as the deprivation of sight or disappearance, drawing on archives and writing as sources and raw materials for her creative process. Taking up the challenge of the invitation, the artist thoughtfully and profoundly examines the critical reception of his work and his commitment to passing it on to future generations.

About the Artist
Visual artist, photographer, writer and film-maker Sophie Calle gives, through her installation artworks, a written and photographic account of situations that are staged and experienced on the mode of autobiography or autofiction. In this respect, she questions the thin boundary between the public and the private. Sophie Calle’s work has been exhibited throughout the world and displayed in many works, among which M’as-tu vue ? (2003) and Rachel, Monique (2012), both published by the Éditions Xavier Barral. She represented France at the Venice Biennale in 2007, and received the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in 2010. Sophie Calle lives and works in Malakoff.

About the Publisher
The choice to install the Picasso dation in the Hotel Salé was made very quickly: it dates back to 1974, a year after the artist’s death. And indeed, the succession of Pablo Picasso was prepared, in particular by the invention of the payment dating mechanism at the end of the 1960s. This process, which allows the State to acquire an exceptional set of Picasso’s works, subsequently enriched by donations from the heirs, involves finding a place to preserve and exhibit them. In agreement with the artist’s family, Michel Guy, Secretary of State for Culture, decides to install the collection in the Hôtel Salé, at 5 rue de Thorigny in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris. The building has belonged to the City of Paris since 1962 and was classified as a Historical Monument in 1968 (order of October 29).
