Magdalena Stöger and Leon Hösl invited five artists to interpret, rearrange, situate, and make visible (anew) the near 4,000 archival documents of the Cathrin Pichler Archive with reference to their own artistic-research practice. Over a period of several months, they worked with selected materials and compilations from the archive, they referred to it and to Cathrin Pichler in terms of content, form and structure.
The index of the near 4,000 archival documents of the Cathrin Pichler Archive extends across the entire publication. It conveys the character and diversity of the archived material and becomes the background noise of the publication, in which the artistic contributions and accompanying texts are embedded. Editorial notes, selected and extracted from the archive by graphic designer Astrid Seme, appear on some pages of the book as enigmatic commentaries. In addition to the contributions by the artists and an introduction by the editors, Martina Genetti and Magdalena Stöger have sketched a portrait of the curator and researcher Cathrin Pichler, which draws connections between her projects and research focuses exclusively on the basis of documents from the archive. In her afterword, the head of the archive Felicitas Thun-Hohenstein reflects on Cathrin Pichler, the practice of the “slow archive” and its significance for the publication Das Cathrin Pichler Archiv von RPU-Artaud-001 bis DAV-Plakate-029.

About the Artist
Cathrin Pichler was born in 1946 in Gmunden, Upper Austria. She studied journalism, art history, sociology and psychology as well as communication theory and information aesthetics. From 1977 to 1982 she was working as a project manager at the Institute of Conflict Research in Vienna. Afterwards she worked as a freelancer at that Institute until 1985. During this time she also worked at the Institute of Demography of theAustrian Academy of Sciences. From 1992 to 1994 she was the first federal art curator together with Robert Fleck. In 1995 she was appointed chief curator of the Kunsthalle Wien, but gave up this post after two years and remained a freelance curator and lecturer at several universities. Cathrin Pichler died in Vienna on June 29, 2012 after a serious illness. In March 2012 the art educator and curator was awarded the Cross of Honour for Science and Art 1st Class.

Magdalena Stöger is a curator, art historian and writer with a focus on media art and technology. She has worked at ZKM | Center for the Arts and Media Karlsruhe, Secession Vienna and 21er Haus Vienna. She co-founded the collective AFK / Away From Keyboard to create a platform for new concepts that expand the potentials for space and embodiment through technologies. In her exhibitions she explores the diverse expressions of time-based media and digital art and focuses on the socio-political implications of a virtual and physical merging.
