Bedu begins with an ending: a violent car explosion in the desert. The group of friends inside flees, leaving behind all their possessions and narrowly escaping into a mysterious wall of swirling sand and dirt. Shot in Utah’s Little Sahara Desert, Bedu is the final project in artist Jim Mangan’s trilogy on rebirth. In a story told through 35 mm and instant photography, the group of friends passes through this exploding curtain of dirt to find themselves in an inexplicable alternate reality, where they literally become the substance of sand. Ultimately, Bedu is a story about the baptismal power of walking away from it all.

About the Artist
Jim Mangan takes an ecological and sociological approach to his work, observing his subjects and their interactions with their environment. His work seeks to forge a sense of connectivity with the earth and disparate communities. For nearly a quarter century, he lived in Colorado and Utah to study water rights and drought habits, to his current career in photography and filmmaking. Mangan has worked on The Crick, a forthcoming monograph published by Twin Palms Publishers, with an essay by Guggenheim Fellow Judith Freeman for the past four years. In 2014, Dashwood Books published Mangan’s BLAST, a monograph of 35 mm photographs with an accompanying film documenting professional rally driver Ken Block riding across the dusty terrain of southern Utah. The photographs from “BLAST” were presented as an installation at the Sundance Film Festival in 2015. His publications are in the Whitney Museum in New York and the New York Public Library collections. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, Kunst im Tunnel in Düsseldorf, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art.
