Images of death saturate the media – from iPhone to 50 inch plasma tv we tune into the world through 3D blood-tinted glasses, gorging ourselves on images of destruction from far-off places. We constantly claim to be learning from the mistakes of our past but clearly we are learning the wrong lessons. In Dresden at least the spirit of reconciliation has prevailed with the rebuilding of the Frauenkirche after the cities destruction towards the end of WWII. The images in this single-sheet folded book were taken using a 35mm pinhole camera. There was therefore no glass lens to distort the image, no photo app used to manipulate the colors and no fake synthetic nostalgia.
About The Artist
Gregory Reuben Levitt is Greg, a fine art typographer.
Working with acrylic on metal sheeting, he replicates the look and feel of early 20th-century enamel signs – painstakingly recreating their charm, texture, and patina by hand.
In his Rose Tinted Glasses project, he creates near-perfect replicas—or deliberate ‘fakes’- of original point-of-sale enamel signage from the early 1900s. These works explore authenticity, nostalgia, and the blurred lines between reproduction and art.
His ongoing project, Send Me a Sign, uses the visual language of vintage advertising to critique and subvert the modern world. By echoing the aesthetics of old enamel signs, he reflects on our over-saturated digital landscape, where social media bombards us with a constant stream of commercial messaging.
In subtle – and sometimes not so subtle – ways, his works offer a commentary on contemporary life. Every element, including the rust, is meticulously hand-painted with acrylic on metal sheets.
